How to Stop Hair Loss

September 30, 2008

Hair loss can happen for many reasons, but it is important to first understand what is natural and what is not. On an average day, the average person loses over 80 hairs from natural fallout. These hairs will be replaced by new ones. Hair loss occurs when no new hair is produced by the body, causing the head to look thinner with less and less hair. It is said about 20% of your hair is resting and the other 80% is actively growing.

A common problem that ails thinning hair is poor circulation to the head. This can be caused by wearing hats or by wearing the hair in ponytails or tight cornrows too much. Of course all of the aforementioned conditions are style issues, and when worn sometimes are not problematic. Consistent stress on the hair and scalp is the problem.

Serious health issues, illness, or surgeries can sometimes cause excessive loss of hair, but in those cases, it is temporary. In the absence of the obvious, it is a good idea to see your family physician and be tested for certain hormonal problems such as thyroid conditions or an imbalance in androgens and estrogens. Androgens are the male sex hormone and estrogens are the female sex hormone. However, men and women have both kinds of hormones. It can be a delicate balance though and an upset can cause health problems of which excessive hair loss is a symptom. Only your physician can tell if you have a hormonal challenge to your health.

It is important to have a well balanced diet, rich in B vitamins, vitamin C and E as well as vitamin A. However, too much vitamin A can actually cause excessive hair loss, everything in moderation. Again, balance is important. Excessive vitamins are usually eliminated in the urine, but some vitamins in excess can actually be toxic.

There are the topical treatments like Rogaine (Minoxodil) applied twice a day to the affected area. There has been success with that treatment. Be sure to study the indication and warning label that comes with the product. It is no longer necessary to have a prescription to purchase Rogaine, but it is a drug and should be used properly.

A new treatment on the market is Provillus Hair Loss Solution, made up of a special blend of vitamins and herbs. Some male pattern baldness is due to an excess of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) Provillus is a DHT blocker and can prevent this kind of hair loss.

Beauty Spas

One of the most common treatment offered at beauty spas are face and body massages. Your massage will take place in a room specifically designed for massages. The room is warm, quiet and comfortable. There is normally soft music piped in to help with the relaxing experience, but if you do not like that, simply tell the masseuse and she will be able to turn it off. The table you lie on is padded and built for giving massages so it is comfortable.

There are many different types of massages, but don’t worry if you don’t know what they are or what to ask for. When you make your appointment you can explain that you never had a massage before and after answering a series of questions, they will know what type of massage you should have and will make your appointment for that masseuse.

Most massage therapists use a form of a Swedish massage. A Swedish massage begins with broad strokes to relieve muscle tension, and then targets smaller muscles for relaxation. The massage therapist will use a light oil to hydrate your skin and reduce tissue friction.
